- China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) announced on June 27 that as of the May 31, 2011, China had set up 714,000 3G base stations across China, according to a statement dated June 27 on the MIIT's website. Three leading Chinese telecom operators China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom set up 214,000, 226,000, and 274,000 base stations, respectively, according to the same source. The number of Chinese 3G users totaled 73.76 million by May 31, 2011, 43% of which use China Mobile's TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) service, followed by China Unicom's 30% and China Telecom's 27%.
- In the wake of the announcement made by China Unicom on May 17 that the company would upgrade its 3G network in 56 cities to HSPA+ (Evolved High Speed Packet Access), China Unicom officially announced that the company's 3G data card based on HSPA+ technology is capable of supporting a 21.6Mbps transmission speed, the Xinhua News reported.
In addition, China Unicom recently announced that the company plans to initiate the roaming service in an additional 11 countries, including Germany, India, Indonesia, Egypt, and Sweden. In April, the company declared that the company would slash international roaming rate by 45% on average in 32 countries and regions, including the United States, and Taiwan, the Shanghai Daily reported.
